The Group Function: Expense Splitting With Friends

A dinner with friends, a trip with four people, a shared apartment. As soon as a group splits expenses over several weeks, someone ends up pulling out a calculator, or worse, just gives up because it's too messy to untangle.

The Group function exists to solve that without ever having to do the math yourself, and more importantly, to actually settle the debt, not just track it.

What It Actually Is: Splitting and Settling Group Expenses

Any Bounce user can create a group in the app. Once the group is created, you invite the other people involved: a travel buddy, your roommates, your friend group.

From there, every time someone pays for a group expense, they add it directly in Bounce. There are two ways to split the amount:

  • Equal split: the app automatically divides the cost among all group members.
  • Custom amounts: you adjust who owes what yourself, which is useful when someone only had one beer or wasn't around for a particular expense.

As expenses pile up, Bounce runs the math in the background and optimizes the transfers. In practice, the app figures out who owes what to whom while minimizing the number of transactions needed, instead of leaving you with ten small crisscrossing repayments among group members.

When it's time to settle things up, there's just one button: Settle Up. Each person uses it to pay what they owe, based on the group's optimized calculation. You tap it, you settle your share, and the money lands with whoever you owed something to.

Many expense-splitting apps stop at the math: they tell you who owes what to whom, but then leave you to make a separate transfer to actually settle the debt. With Bounce, Settle Up isn't just a summary; it's an actual payment. Splitting and paying group expenses happen in the same place, with no extra manual step.

Why We Built It This Way

We kept seeing the same problem everywhere, including with well-known expense-splitting apps: they're great at calculating who owes what, but that's where they stop. You still have to leave the app for a separate transfer to actually pay each other. That always leaves one manual step, and that step either never happens or takes weeks to sort out.

We also wanted to avoid the math nightmare that comes with bigger groups. Without optimization, a trip with five people and fifteen different expenses can easily turn into twenty crisscrossing transfers you have to sort out yourself. Bounce does that math for you and reduces it to the smallest number of transfers actually needed.

And most importantly, we wanted the final settlement to be as simple as one tap, for each person. No calculator, no list to double check, no "wait, I think you still owe me for gas." Everyone sees exactly what they owe and to whom, and settles their share with a single tap.

Who It's For

  • Groups of friends who travel together: accommodation, gas, groceries, activities, everything that piles up over several days.
  • Roommates who share recurring expenses (groceries, household items, outings) and want to settle up once a month without redoing the math from scratch.
  • Any organized group: a group gift, a sports league, a study group that orders food together.
  • Anyone who hates doing math to figure out who owes what to whom in a group of more than two people.

Two Real-Life Examples

Four friends head to a cottage for the weekend. On Friday, Ana pays for groceries. On Saturday, Karim pays for gas for the drive and Léa pays for dinner at a restaurant. On Sunday, Ana pays again for coffee and snacks.

Each payment gets added to the Bounce group as it happens, some split equally among all four, others adjusted because Karim doesn't eat seafood and skipped his share of dinner.

By the end of the weekend, nobody has to calculate who owes what to whom across four different expenses. Bounce has already done the math: instead of eight or ten possible crisscrossing transfers, each person ends up with at most one or two optimized amounts to pay. Karim opens the group, sees exactly how much he owes and to whom, and taps Settle Up to pay his share. The money lands right away. Everyone else does the same on their own time, and nobody had to touch a calculator.

Léa and her two roommates run a permanent Bounce group for their apartment. Every time one of them pays for groceries, the internet bill, or toilet paper in bulk, they add it to the group. Some expenses are split equally among the three of them, others adjusted when one of them was away for the weekend.

At the end of the month, instead of pulling up a spreadsheet or trying to remember who paid for what over four weeks, they simply open the group. Bounce has already calculated everyone's optimized balance. Each of them settles their share with Settle Up, and the group starts fresh for the following month, without ever having to leave the app to pay each other back.

The Bottom Line

You no longer have to pull out a calculator, or juggle between an app that does the math and a separate transfer to actually get reimbursed. With the Group function, you add expenses as they happen, Bounce optimizes who owes what to whom, and everyone settles their share with a single tap using Settle Up.
